Continental Challenge Force NPFL Clubs To Reschedule

Three clubs of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), have had their Match Day 2 & 3 fixtures rescheduled. This announcement was conveyed in a press release from the league’s governing body, the League Management Company (LMC).

Rescheduling of the two Match Day fixtures is at the behest of the clubs who are involved in continental competitions. The clubs affected are Akwa United, Nasarawa United, both involved in CAF Confederation Cup, and 2-time CAF Champions League winners, Enyimba International.

Affected fixtures of Match Day 2 include: Akwa United versus Ikorodu United, Enyimba International versus Shooting Stars and FC IfeanyiUbah vs Nasarawa United. These are rescheduled to hold on March 16, 2016.

In the press statement, Salihu Abubakar, the Chief Operating Officer of the League Management Company said the clubs requested for the rescheduling of their fixtures.

"The clubs were already not in the Match Day 3 fixtures due to their continental fixtures holding on the weekend of February 26-28 but we have received representations from officials of the three clubs pleading to be allowed to focus on their continental fixtures", Abubakar explained.

Match Day 3 fixtures which also includes the three clubs will be played accordingly on March 23, 2016.

Nasarawa United will fly out on Tuesday to Dakar, Senegal for the second leg tie of their CAF Confederation Cup against AS Academie Demonstration Foot. The Lafia side escaped narrowly with a 2-1 win in the first leg.

By the same token, Akwa United will play their second leg tie of the CAF Confederations Cup against Vita Club de Mokanda of Congo. The Promise Keepers, as Akwa United is also known, won the first leg tie 1-0 and are expected to be at home in Uyo, Akwa Ibom.

Enyimba International have not been on a bright start in both domestic and continental league competitions. Though early in the days, the People’s Elephant have a chance to upturn 1-0 first leg loss to Vipers FC of Uganda, in Kampala. Enyimba in the second leg of the CAF Champions League, are host to Vipers FC and will play their fixture at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.

Fixtures of other clubs remain unaffected as games will hold this Wednesday as previously scheduled.
